9 Days Nar Phu Valley trekking is a short itinerary to visit the pristine Nar and Phu Valley of the Annapurna region. The trek begins and completes in Kathmandu. It is a short trek that lets travelers enjoy all the experiences as the usual Nar Phu Trekking program. Nar Phu is a controlled region inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. The Nar-Phu officially started welcoming the trekkers only after 2003. The 9 Days Nar-Phu Valley trekking is a combination of unspoiled culture, adventure walk, and scenic landscape.

Many of the trekkers often extend their trek itinerary to Annapurna Circuit trek. The longer itinerary includes the visit to the lower Mustang. The villages of Nar and Phu have been preserving the centuries-old monasteries, Gombas and Chhortens as their ancestral property. The unlisted heritage is a great attraction for travelers visiting the region.

9 Days Nar Phu Valley Trekking Map

9 Days Nar Phu Valley Short trekking program begins at Kathmandu with a full day drive to Koto Village of Manang district. The trail to Nar Phu splits with the legendary Annapurna Round trekking trail at Koto. We follow Nar Khola (river) after crossing the Marsyandi river at Koto. A few trekkers hike to Nar Phu Valley even in the peak tourist season. As a result, we will encounter very few people on the way to our destination. Walk through the forests, pastures following the narrow trekking trail.

A frequent glimpse of the mountain view keeps on playing hide and seek with the visitors.  The Colorful Mani walls, Chortens, monastery, and rock paintings welcome the visitor to the valley. On the way, pass tiny settlements of Dharmashala, Meta, Chyank, and Kang. The settlements have their own stories to share with the trekkers. We will spot the broken sections of the ruined buildings on the way which are the living memory of the 1960’s Khampa revolution.

Side trips from the Phu Village

Trekkers can enjoy a rest day at Phu to acclimatize. Besides resting, go for exploration and visit Tashi Khaling Gumba, Himlung Himal Base Camp (4,920m), and the sacred site of Damodar Kunda trail.

Incredible Kang La Pass

During the favorable weather condition, trekkers can directly proceed with an adventure journey to Nar via the Phu Pass (5,050m) and Nar Pass (5,400m). It requires a proper organization of the gears, mental and physical preparedness.  The first part of the trail retraces to the Meta village. Then visit the Kangaru Himal Base Camp (4,500m) and proceed for the Kanga La Pass (5,320m) via Nar Phedi and Nar Village.

The incredible view from Kang La pass tops all the experiences of the Nar Phu valley trek.  Capture the Annapurna Range in 360 degrees. The  Chulu Range, Himlung Himal (7,176m), Kangaru Himal (6,981m) and Lamjung Himal (6,983m) lines up the view just in front of your vision. Descend to the Marsyangdi Valley, meet the main trail of the Annapurna circuit at Ngawal.

The standard 9 Days Nar Phu Valley Trekking is a tea house trek. Trekkers can complete the trek in a short time and with a limited budget.

  • 01 Day: Drive Kathmandu – Koto (2600m) – 9 to 10 hours via Besisahar
  • 02 Day: Trek Koto – Meta (3560m) – 8 to 9 hours
  • 03 Day: Trek Meta – Phu (4050m) – 8 to 9 hours
  • 04 Day: Explore & Acclimatization rest day at Phu
  • 05 Day: Trek Phu – Nar Phedi (3750m) – 7 to 8 hours
  • 06 Day: Trek Nar Phedi – Nar (4150m) -3 to 4 hours

Best season for 9 Days Nar Phu Valley trekking

The 9 Days Nar Phu Valley trek is possible even during the monsoon season. However, the monsoon rain, flooding, and landslide may disturb the lower section of the trail during the rainy season. Spring  (March-May) and Autumn (September- November) are the most favorable months to hike the region. The heavy snow may cover the high passes resulting in impassable snow piling.

Difficulty Level

Trekking to Nar Phu Valley is a challenging journey. The steep ascents and log days walk to make it a challenging trek. The region has a limited accommodation option. Trekkers have to cover a fixed distance in a day to reach from one lodge to another. The high altitude walk and steep ascents in altitude result in an unpredictable scenario of how one’s body will respond.  Oriental Journeys does not recommend that beginners go for the 9 Days Nar Phu valley trekking. It is suitable for trekkers with enough high-altitude hiking experience.  Trekking requires more fit physical conditions.

Permits for 9 Days Nar Phu Valley Trekking

Similar to other itineraries for Nar Phu village trips, the permits for 9 Days Nar Phu Valley trek require a controlled area permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Entry permit. Nepal Government, Department of Immigration issues the controlled area permit for Nar-Phu. The permit costs US$90 (September – November) and USD$75 (Dec-August). The permit for the region is often called a special permit.

Meals

Food option varies from simple to local dishes to luxuries plates. Bread varieties, noodles, pasta, Dal Bhat are common. Alike the other trekking region, the lodges provide breakfast and dinner for the tourist staying there.

    9 Days Nar Phu Valley Trekking - Detail Itinerary

    01

    Day 01 : Kathmandu to Koto (2600m) drive

    Your guide meets you at your hotel in the early morning.  Your drive begins for Besishahar (185km). It takes 5 to 6 hours to reach Besishahar. Enjoy a scenic drive with a glimpse of mountains, hills, several settlements, and valleys. Take another vehicle at Besisahar for Chame (2670m). It is an off-road journey on a jeep or local bus for the next 4 to 5 hours. Pass through the Nagdi, Bhulbhule, Sange, Chamche, Tall, Dharapani, Bagarchha, Danakya, Timang, Thanchok, and finally reach Koto. Capture the view of wonderful Manaslu and Annapurna II from Timang (2,720m). Overnight at the teahouse lodge.

    Day 02 : Trek Koto to Meta (3560m) – 8 to 9 hours

    Today is the first day of the trek. Cross the bridge over Marshyangdi river and follow the trail leading to the Nar Phu valley. Pass through the beautiful forest above the Phu Khola (river). Witness the several caves and Dharmasala on the way. The vegetation becomes thinner as we reach a narrow canyon before the Dharmasala. Overnight at the teahouse at Meta.

    Day 03 : Trek Meta to Phu (4050m) – 8 to 9 hours

    The walk is one of the lovely hiking. It later opens to the high pasture plateau. The Nar people use the pasture as their winter settlement.  The terrain is unique with the white rocks, low shrub and juniper, and evergreens vegetation. The trail passes through the semi-permanent settlements of Junam and Chako. The gate of the Phu village called Pupigyal Kwe, gives the first view of the three villages of Phu. Stay overnight at the teahouse lodge.

    Day 04 : Explore & Acclimatization rest day at Phu

    The day is for acclimatization at a high altitude. Walk around the village and explore the exotics of the unspoiled traditions. The organic lifestyle and culture of the villages are very impressive as they remain intact for centuries.  The day with villagers is well spent for all the tourists including the keen photographers. The weather is perfect with blue skies for photography. Visit the remarkable century-old monastery and fort. You may spot blue sheep in the nearby rocks which is very common. Taste the milk butter Tibetan tea or local whisky called Raksi. Overnight at Phu.

    Day 05 : Trek Phu to Nar Phedi (3750m) – 7 to 8 hours

    Retrace your footsteps back to Junam Kharka. Continue walking up to Nar Phedi. We have night accommodation at the monastery of Nar Phedi. The rooms are neat and clean. The nuns serve the meal for the night. Contribute some for the monastery into their donation box. Overnight at Nar Phedi.

    Day 06 : Trek Nar Phedi to Nar (4150m) -3 to 4 hours

    The trail to Nar requires an ascent along the windy trail up to the Nar hilltop. The Chortens on the way are colorfully painted and topped with bamboo reflecting their ancient smell. It is just a 3-4 hours walk to reach the Nar Village. The Nar village feels more lively than the Phu. We will stay overnight in the lodges on the outskirts of the village. The lodges are comfortable and serve an extensive menu. fabric for rugs and blankets. You have options to visit the village and observe their lifestyle.

    Day 07 : Trek Nar to Ngawal (3675m) via Kang La pass (5306m) – 9 to 10 hours

    This is a long day adventure walk. Crossing the Kang La Pass is tough. However, the view from the top is rewarding and tops all the experience during the 9 Days Nar Phu Valley trekking. The trail meets the popular Annapurna circuit on the other side. Capture the view of Mt. Gangapurna, its glacier lake, and Tilicho Peak including the northern side of the Annapurna massif from the pas. Ngawal is a beautiful village in Upper Pisang. Enjoy a comfortable lodge accommodation and relax for the night.

    Day 08 : Trek Ngawal to Pisang and drive to Besisahar

    You climb 2000m down from the Pass to the village of Ngawal. It is more greenery around. Continue your walk to Pisang after the breakfast. After a few hours walk, catch a vehicle for Beshisahar. It is a 4 wheel drive on offroad. Enjoy your rewarding dinner and relax comfortably in a hotel at Besisahar.

    Day 09 : Drive to Kathmandu – 5 to 6 hours,

    After breakfast you will drive through the Koto, Thanchok, Timang village to the Besisahar by jeep or bus. We’ll have a bumpy drive to Besisahar. Again drive back to Kathmandu about 5 to 6 hours.
