The Badi Malika Khaptad trek offers some of the best natural landscapes, in the western section of Nepal’s Himalayas. Basically, Badi Malika, Rama Roshan, and Khaptad are the major attraction of the trek. You will reach the Badi Malika, apex of the trek, hiking through the wide grassland, beautiful lakes, and foggy valleys. Badi Malika is the home of the goddess Malika and hence a popular pilgrimage site for people from Nepal as well as India.
The ultimate destination of Badimalika situates on top of a hillock (4,200 meters). The place wears a festive look during the Janai Purnima festival (August). Thousands of people from different parts of the country as well as neighboring India visit the temple on this auspicious day. The locals of Bajura perform different dances like Deuda, Hudkeuli, Bhuwo, and Thadi among others.
Sprawling grasslands and spiritual values are the identity of Khaptad National Park, whereas, the Rama Roshan is home to beautiful lakes and grasslands.
Trekking the Badi Malika Khaptad route is totally a different experience relative to Everest and the Annapurnas areas. This region is pristine and lets you feel to be a single outsider on the trail.
As the area is relatively new, the infrastructural part is yet to develop. However, the trail is operable throughout the year. But heavy snowfall during winter can affect trekkers. Though teahouses are available in lower areas, trekkers are advised to be self-sufficient on food and accommodation.
The people in Western Nepal especially the Western Himalayan region practice a unique culture, tradition, and lifestyle. The region is pristine and unspoiled. The major population of the region is called Khas. They speak a separate dialect called Khas Language. The Khas Language is considered to be the source of Nepali Language. The local people here worship Masto. Masto is the main deity of Khas people. Unlike, gods & goddesses in other religions, Masto gods do not have any specific image. A spiritual person like Jhankris or shamans mediate for communication between people and gods.
