The region is home to Damodar Kunda and Saaligram. So, it is holy among both Hinduism and Buddhism followers.

The region is largely inhabited by Tibetan Buddhists. Upper Mustang was a separate kingdom till the very recent days. It is regarded as an ancient Himalaya kingdom extended to the northern part of Nepal at the top of Kali Gandaki River.
