Religious Significance

The Gosaikunda Lake trek has its own different stories of origin. According to one story, Lord Shiva who is the God of Power and Destruction in Hindu Mythology created  Gosaikund Lake. As per the story, he thrust his Trisul (holy Trident) into a mountain to extort water so that he could cool his hurtful throat after he had swallowed poison. Similarly, people believe the large rock at the center as Shiva Shrine.  In addition to this, the holy water of Gosaikunda said to have particular significance during Gangadashahara. On the occasion of the sacred thread festival, Janai Purnima, thousands of pilgrims of Nepal and India visit the area.

Gosaikunda Lake trek takes to the sacred lake of Gosainkunda which s one of the most interesting religious sites. The beautiful scenery of different surrounding lakes and situated on the way of particular trekking route of Dhunche –Gosainkunda – Helambu trail makes is more alluring. The Gosainkunda trek also adjoins the famous Langtang trek in the same district. The holy lake is two days trek from Dhunche and thousands of devotees visit this site on the full moon day of mid-June to mid of August to take a ritual holy dip in the cold mountain water.

Getting the trailhead

Gosaikunda Lake trek. begins at Dhunche. The town of Dhunche is the trailhead of Gosainkunda Lake Trek. Transfer service of local bus departs regularly in the morning from Kathmandu at Balaju Bus Park. Besides that hiring, a 4WD jeep or Scorpio Car is the best option for the trip. It will save your private time and let you enjoy the trip in your way. It will be a 5-7 hours scenic journey along the thrilling Pasang Lhamu Highway. The highway connects the capital city of Kathmandu with Tibet at Timure.

 Best time to visit Gosainkunda

The best time to trek the area is September- mid-December, and March – the first week of June. Autumn is the best season due to the clear sky and stop of monsoon season. The region is rich with greenery and distance views during the season.  Whereas Spring is time for new leaves, blooming rhododendron forests, and snowy peaks. Gosainkunda Weather

Generally, the weather in the Gosainkunda area is unpredictable and keeps on changing several times a day. The air is humid and cold. Still, with the tantalizing sun shining above you, the chilled air makes you feel cold. You should carry warm clothes, hiking boots, sunglasses, walking sticks, gloves, raincoats, medicines, reusable water bottles, and light snacks.

Entry & Permits

Trekking in the Gosaikunda area requires two types of permits. You can get issued a Langtang National Park entry permit at the checking counter of Langtang National Park located just a few hundred meters before Dhunche. The permit costs US$30 and a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card from Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) in Kathmandu. Gosaikunda Trek from Dhunche

The common route to hike the route is to follow the Gosaikunda trek from Dhuche. Dhunche is the mountain town and district headquarter of Rasuwa. The town is accessible with all kinds of vehicles throughout the year. It has lodges ranging from budget to a hotel with standard tourist facilities. The approximate distance of 116 km between Kathmandu and Dhunche takes 6-7 hours of drive. You will stay at Dhunche for the first night before your trek start.  The standard itinerary of Gosainda Trek from Dhunche starts real trekking at the end of the town.

    Gosaikunda Lake Trek - Detail Itinerary

    Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu

    From Tribhuvan International Airport you will be transferred to your hotel. Oriental Journeys will invite you for the trip’s itinerary briefing. You will be provided with the necessary permits. In the evening, the welcome dinner will be provided in the Nepali local cultural restaurant.

    Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche (2090m) 6 to 7 hour. and trek uphill to Deurali

    Early morning, your guide from Oriental Journeys will take you to the bus park. The Bus to Dhuche starts from Balaju Bus Park which is close to Thamel. You will be driving through the beautiful village and you will see snow Scrapped Mountain along the Langtang Himalaya. The short hike starts from Dhunche. You will be staying at Deurali Overnight.

    Day 03: Trek to Cholangpati via Chandan bari

    Trek uphill to hill trekking to Chandanbari. You will have the opportunity to explore Chandanbari till lunch, Visiting the Cheese factory and tasting the Yak-Nak Cheese is wonderful to experience. After Lunch Hike up to the Cholangpati. Explore surrounding. Overnight at the Lodge.

    Day 04: Trek to Gosainkunda and Explore the lake area

    Trekking to Gosaikunda from Cholang Pati via Lauribina is a tougher walk. The climb is easy but due to the high altitude walk, you should walk slowly and steadily. On the way, you will enjoy the unique mountain views of the Ganesh Himal, Tibet Mountains, and Langtang Mountain range, and the valley down.

    The Gosaikunda is surrounded by many other holy lakes which are popularly known as “Kunda” in Nepal and they are named Saraswati Kunda, Surya Kunda, Bhairab Kunda, etc. Besides the holy lake visit, you can enjoy the breathing mountain view of Mt. Langtang and Ganesh Himal from the same spot.

    Day 08: Departure to your next destination

    You will have free time in the morning to explore the Thamel market.
