Mountaineering activity to begin in Nepal as the news of Prince of Bahrain to arrive in Nepal for Peak Climbing. Amid the ongoing Lockdown, the government of Nepal has decided to allow 18 climbers including the prince of Bahrain to enter Nepal for mountaineering purposes.

The decision is made by a cabinet meeting held on 31 August 2020. The cabinet sends a recommendation of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) along with the decision. The mountaineering team includes the 15 people from Bahrain including the prince of Bahrain. The team includes the other three from the United Kingdom. They are scheduled to will come to Nepal on charter flights after September 15.

The climbing team plans to attempt to scale Mt Manaslu and Mt Lobuche. The cabinet decision states, the team should follow the safety measures prepared by the health ministry upon their arrival in Nepal.

The government of Nepal resumed the mountaineering activities from July after an interruption of nearly five months due to COVID-19. The announcement made in July opened the peaks across the country for climbers.

As per the ministry source, it is preparing a quarantine modality for tourists arriving in Nepal. The proposed quarantine modality will make tourists stay mandatorily in hotel quarantine for a week. They will head to their trekking/climbing destination after undergoing PCR tests.

Nepal has paused all its mountaineering activities since March 2020 following the countrywide lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Indra Jatra

The vibrant festival of Indra Jatra is the most searched term for the cultural tour in Kathmandu. Nepal being a multi-ethnic and multicultural country embraces multi-ethnic traditions and celebrates multiple festivals of different castes. The brotherhood and love among multi-culture and traditions are always appreciable in Nepal.

There are lots of festivals celebrated in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Among them, Indra Jatra is one of the famous festivals. Indra Jatra is the specific festival of the Newar community. However, it attracts the attention of all ethnic people and brings them to Basantapur Durbar Square to watch the procession. The observer can see the procession of Living Goddess Kumari along with Lord Ganesh and Lord Bhairav along with Lord Indra.

The performer of this festival is solely Newars and other ethnic groups are the observer. The celebration is done colorfully. The charming sounds of the beating drums and other traditional instruments provide immense pleasure to every observer. All the observers are enjoying the same music during the festival. The vibrating sound of the musical instruments provides positiveness and natural energy to everyone attending the festival.

About Indra Jatra

This is the greatest festival in Kathmandu valley. Indra is the greatest God in Hindu Festival. Indra means the God of Rain and the lord of heaven whereas Jatra means the procession. The festival has been founded to be celebrated during the Lichhavi Era by king Gunakamdeva, the founder of Kantipur city which is now famous as Kathmandu. This weeklong festival is usually celebrated between August to September for good harvest and rain.

During this occasion, the chariot is pulled for three sequential days. The first day is known as Kwaneya and on this day, the chariot is pulled out and makes its way from Basantapur by following Maru, Jaisadewal, Lagan, and Bhimsensthan and finally ends at Basantapur. The second day is known as Yenha Punhi. During the day, the chariot procession begins from Basantapur by making its way to Pyaphal, Nyata, Tengal, Asan, Indra Chowk, Makhan, and ends at Basantapur again.

The final day is famous as Nanichaya day. During the day, the chariot is pulled by revelers from Basantapur to Pyaphal, Yatkha, Nyata, Kilagal, Bhedsing, Indra chowk, Makhan, and ends at Basantapur.

Mythological beliefs of Indra Jatra

As described in the myth, it is said that the mother of Lord Indra needs a white and enchanting flower which is called Parijat to perform a ritual. To bring a flower for the mother, lord Indra descended to the earth in search of Parijat by impersonating himself as a common man. When he saw a flower and plucked it out some of its petals, the framer saw and captivated him for stealing the flower. The myth behind the Indra Jatra.

Dances in Jatra

When Indra did not return from the earth with the flower, the mother of Lord Indra was worried a lot. Then the Vahan of Indra ‘ Phul Khusi’ descended back to the earth to find his Master. He was also surprised by the narrow alleys of Kathmandu. A few times later in his search, he found Lord Indra.

Then he passed this message to Lord Indra’s mother. She descended back to earth to free her son from the farmer’s punishment. At that time, she excused herself with all the villagers but nobody excuses her. However, villagers said her to take an oath to fulfill their conditions to free Lord Indra.

Then the mother of Lord Indra grew worried as her son delayed his return from Earth, Phul Khusi(Vahan of Indra) descended to find his master. He wandered around the narrow alleys of Kathmandu Valley. During that time, streets are filled with flowers. Peoples and mellow music, after hours of search he found Lord Indra.

He passed this news to Lord Indra’s mother, and she eventually descended back to Earth to free her son. She requested villagers, but they didn’t consider her words. The villagers put forward their conditions to free Lord Indra. As mentioned in the condition, Lord Indra should visit back to Earth every year at the same time and provide enough rainfall for the good production of crops.

Indra’s mother accepted the condition and provides enough rainfall and took Indra with her to heaven. This truly symbolizes that celebrating the Indra Jatra festival means expressing the feeling of gratitude towards Lord Indra and his mother for the timely rainfall, good production, good harvest, and memory of the deceased family members.

When do we celebrate the Indra Jatra Festival?

The biggest festival Indra Jatra is celebrated between August and September. We celebrate this festival for 8 days at Basantapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu. The festival begins every year from the day of Bhadra Dwadasi to Aswin Krishna Chaturdashi. The celebration does not take place on the same day and the dates are changeable because it is held according to the lunar calendar. In 2020, the festivals take place between 30 August to 6th of September. The main attraction will be on 1st September. During the festival, all the farmer’s thanks Lord Indra for the rain and harvest. Even on the same day, they will worship Bhairav, Lord Ganesh, and Kumari (living Goddess).

Festival Celebration in Brief

The festival starts with Yosin Thanegu, the erection of Yasin or Linga, a pole from which the banner of Indra is unfurled, at Basantapur Durbar Square. The pole is erected by shortening and stripping off tree branches. And it is obtained from the forest of Nala, a small town located 29 km east of Kathmandu Valley. The muscles of hundreds are used to place it on the stage of Durbar Square.

First Day

On the beginning day of Indra Jatra, the processor will hold a special flag-raising ceremony. The pole is erected outside of Hanuman Dhoka and it is 10 m high. During the flag-raising ceremony, there will have a big dance. During the dance ceremony, they will show a series of dances including Indra and his captivating scenes. That creates fun for the observer. Also, different animals like buffaloes, goats, and fish are worshiped as Goddesses. At the end of the Indra Jatra, the offerings will be distributed to the crowds. Likewise, Upeku Wanegu is another event on the first day. In the event, they will remember their deceased family members by holding flowers in their hands.

In Between

The procession normally starts at 4 pm and resumes until midnight. People celebrate Indra Jatra in three different sequences. At first, they celebrate Kumar Jatram then Indra Jatra, and finally Bhairav Jatra. During the celebration, they celebrate the flagpole ceremony, blood sacrifice, and displaying the masks of Bhairav. These three sequences formed the big festival and they turned to Basantapur Durbar Square to perform the ceremony. During this time, Basantapur Durbar Square is filled with a huge crowd of people and the processor playing soothing drum beats makes the environment energetic, joyful, and blissful.

Every chariot is decorated with beautiful flowers and lamps. The lamp in the chariot in the evening provides you positive energy of Kumari, Ganesh, and Bhairav. From Basantapur, all three chariots are taken to the inner city of Kathmandu. In the front, people beat drums, perform masked dances and take beautiful flowers in their hands. Besides this, they will also take small lamps and sing hymns while touring the valley. The tour takes the routes toward the historical places of the valley.

Indra Jatra in Kathmandu

The chariot festival ends in three days. The three chariots carried on three different days are the human representation of Ganesh, Bhairav, and Kumari. They take the chariot on the street. The chariot is pulled out by the strong hands of the hundreds of men around the streets towards the historical places of Kathmandu valley with the help of ropes.

During the Indra Jatra Festival

The first day of the festival is Kwaneya. On the first day, the chariot-pulling process starts from Basantapur and ends at Basantapur. It makes a round tour of the historical places of the valley. The chariot takes towards the route of Maru, Chinkanmugal, Jaisidewal, Lagan, Brahma Marga, Wonde, Hyumata, Kohity, Bhimsenthan, Maru, and finally takes back at the same spot- Basantapur. The first day is the most important day of Indra Jatra. During this time, the head of the state come and pay respect to Kumari, the living goddess of Nepal.

Langtang Trekking Cost

Langtang Trekking Cost

The Langtang Trekking Cost blog intends to provide detailed information on associated costs for the trek. Langtang is one of the closest destinations to Kathmandu. The destination is relatively cheaper than other classical trekking destinations in Nepal. There are various factors that affect the cost of the trip. The number of trek days, facility and services used and personal spending behavior is major factors to affect the cost part.  A standard package for the Langtang trek costs $700-$900 for the trekking parts. In addition, travel, medical and accidental insurance are mandatory for the traveler.

In brief, the total Langtang Trekking Cost may depend on the following factors:

  • Travel itinerary; whether it is short or long
  • Your trekking season
  • Traveling in a group or solo
  • Accommodation you choose
  • Choice of food and drinks
  • Electric gadgets you carry, communication expenses
  • The cost for permits (trekking Tamang heritage requires a special permit)
  • Vehicle to and from Trailhead
  • Preferred guiding Language
  • Services, Guides, and porters

Knowing about the Langtang trekking cost is the most essential factor to plan for hiking. Similarly, the trekking season to experience the best, necessary equipment to carry, and the itinerary are the other factors to know about the trek.

Cost Determining Factors

Here is a detailed explanation of the factors that make up the total Langtang trek costs.

Permits

Trekking Langtang Region requires the Langtang National Park entry permit, and Trekkers’ Information Management System Card (TIMS). Both permits are mandatory. The National Park revenue counter at Bhrikutimandap and the check-post at Dhunche issue entry permits for visitors. It costs US$30 exclusive of 13%VAT.

Entry permits

Similarly, the TIMS is another information management system card that records the personal details of travelers with their respective itineraries. It costs US$10 for package trekkers and US$10 for 20 Free Individual Trekkers. Whereas the SAARC national is required to pay $6 & $3 respectively. TIMS counters at Thamel, Maligoan, and Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu issue the TIMS card.

The trekkers going to trek the Tamang Heritage trail need to issue a special permit from the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu. You should apply through a registered trekking company for the permit. It costs US$20 per person for a week.

Lodge & Accommodation for Langtang Trekking

You have a large range of choices for hotels and accommodation in Kathmandu. Many hostels, Budget, star category, and Boutique hotels are located, mainly, in Kathmandu. Trekkers may choose the accommodation in Kathmandu for Langtang Trekking Cost to limit within the budget. However, the lodges in the trekking trails serve basic facilities.  The price for the accommodation ranges from US$5 to US$150. The Three Standard accommodation in Kathmandu generally costs US$40-60.

Lodge and Accommodation in Langtang Valley

The lodges at Dhunche and Syabrubensi have comfortable rooms with attached or common bathrooms. The rooms are comfortable and cozy. On your trek, in lower regions, you may find different types of accommodation. But at higher altitudes, the rooms are basic but, comfortable and cozy.

The teahouse lodges are the only accommodation on the trekking trails. They have basic facilities with common toilets. The rooms are warm and wooden insulated, generally equipped with twin sharing beds. The rooms are cheaper in the off-season compared to the peak trekking seasons. The cost varies from US$15. The teahouse may be overcrowded during the peak trekking season. The operators help with the pre-booking of the lodges or the accompanying guide prebooks the room for you.

Meals and Drinks

Your choice of food, meals, and beverages affect your Langtang Trekking Cost. Unlike the restaurants in the cities, trekking trails have small restaurants. Often they provide lodging facilities with few rooms. Trekkers staying at the teahouses are expected to have their dinner and breakfast at the same restaurant. The restaurants have a standard food menu for the visitors with options such as noodles, pasta, macaroni, bread, potato, etc. The menu is a bit costly at a higher altitude. Dal Bhat is common in all places which are served with lentil soup, curry, and pickle. Basically, the Guide, porter, and Nepali tourists prefer to consume Dal Bhat. You will have a good opportunity to taste local Yak cheese during Langtang Region trekking.

The breakfast menu includes Tibetan bread, potato curry, Bread,  muesli, and omelet, along with tea/coffee, etc. You may choose the option from the menu. Each meal costs around US5-$15. A packaged trip excludes the extra drinks and beverages. You can carry light snacks such as granola bars, chocolates, etc. to cut down your total costs.

Trekkers will have a lunch pause on the way. The itineraries adjust the lunch spots on the way to your next camp.

Trekking Season

Langtang Valley trekking trails are a bit crowded during the peak trekking season like Sept-Nov, and March-May. The lodges may charge relatively higher during the peak season. Trekking may choose low trekking seasons like December-January for low traffic on the trails. Some operators also offer a discounted rate for the package. You might need to carry extra warm clothes while trekking in the off-season.

Travel in Groups

Traveling with a group helps to share your fixed costs while trekking the Langtang Region. A solo traveler has to bear single supplement charges for rooms and accommodation when there are no groups to accommodate. You can share your guiding and porter costs in your group. Traveling is a group that is a pleasure and a good opportunity to share your experience.

Drinking-Water

Drinking water is abundantly available throughout the trail. But it is not safe to drink directly from the tap, stream, or natural spring. Carry water purifying drops or tablets along with you. You can get your bottle filled and add the purifying tablets at least one hour before drinking. Optionally, you can ask for hot drinking water at your lodge for the nights. Also can fill your bottle at the lodge for the day. A bottle of water costs US$0.25-0.30 at the lower altitude whereas the price rises up to US$3 at the higher altitude. We suggest discouraging carrying the water bottle to minimize plastic-related pollution.

Number of Days in Trekking

You can trek and experience the Langtang Valley in 7-25 Days. The 7 Days trek is an exclusive short trek. A rapid Langtang Valley trek and Gosainkunda trek are options to complete in 7 Days. The longer your trek itinerary the higher will be the cost for your program. The expenses for meals, accommodation and guide and porter service determine your costs. The guide’s cost for a language other than English may cost higher.

Transportation

Langtang Trekking Transportation

The choice of transportation is another factor to determine the Langtang Trekking Cost. Local buses and jeeps serve the locals and tourists for transportation from Kathmandu to Dhunche/Syabrubensi. Choosing to travel in private Jeeps is another option but costs higher. The local vehicle departs regularly from the local bus park in Kathmandu. The one-way bus/jeep fare costs US$8-$12. Hiring a private jeep will cost around $150. I

Guides and Porters

The mountains of Nepal are rich with natural attractions and amazing beauties. Alongside, the risk factors are associated. Whether they are human-related, physical, or weather-related. Accessing the risk factors, analyzing them, and taking guidance are surely the helping factors to make a successful trip. Local guides are habitual with the mountain terrain. Accompanying a local guide through a registered trekking company ensure your personal safety. The porters carry luggage for the trekker. Hiring a guide costs US$30 per day and a porter will cost US$25 per day. The cost includes meals, accommodation, and insurance. The local operator is responsible to provide necessary gear and insurance for guides and porters.

Insurance Costs

Travel and accidental insurance are mandatory to trek the Langtang Region. The journey in remote lands is never a risk-free activity. Oriental Journeys access all the potential risk factors during your Langtang Trekking. Despite the fact, there might be an accident that claims physical dangers for the trekkers. Hence, it is mandatory to have travel insurance to trek the region. Further, there are always risks of accidents, luggage loss, flight delay, or cancellation. In case of any emergency, there may need for helicopter evacuation as well.

Purchasing the related insurance policy covers all the requirements. In normal conditions, you can buy an insurance policy for a 30-day period that may cost US$150 (approx).

Additional Costs

The additional costs may depend on person to person. Buying local souvenirs for your friends and families, personal expenses for communication, and donations to the local monasteries arise extra costs over your trip expenses. Further, tipping your guides and porters will come at an extra cost on top. All these expenses are exclusive of your package costs.

Final Thought for Langtang Trekking Cost

The cost is a major factor in the experience you choose. Every traveler wishes to minimize the cost of their trip. Choose some alternative ideas to minimize the cost of your trip. Carry a solar power charger or a power bank instead of extra batteries or mobile sets. You should carry only the most essential things in your backpack to limit the luggage weight. This helps travel lights. Pack some snacks, energy bars, and chocolates from the city because they are expensive items at a higher altitude. You may not need to buy expensive gear for the Langtang trek. Hiring at the local shops at Thamel will be cheaper. Write to Oriental Journeys for detailed information while planning your trip to Langtang.

Tipping Guide in Nepal

Tipping Guide in Nepal

The tipping Guide in Nepal is crucial information for tourists visiting Nepal on vacation.  Gratitude, often known as tips, is a means to demonstrate your appreciation to someone for his or her services. Tipping expresses your satisfaction with the service delivered. However, it is difficult to know how much to tip tour adventure guides and high-altitude porters. There are various things to consider, including the trip’s budget, travel days, and the number of team members. Although tipping is not required, guides and trekking porters are customarily on the lookout for some at the last rendezvous. Tipping is always a matter of personal preferences. Regardless, you should only leave a tip if you feel the personnel did a professional job.

Trekking Guide and Porters

Trekking guides and porters are none other than the supporters, assistants, carriers, and guards on your excursions across isolated places. The guides are mountain heroes, especially when you go on adventure trips mountain climbing. They can make or break your trekking adventures in Nepal, even if you have journeyed all the way there. They have extremely difficult and demanding jobs. The salary paid to the guide is sometimes insufficient to allow them to enjoy their work. In this situation, tipping is a great motivation for the guide to save the amount for the off-seasons.

Tipping Guide in Nepal

As per the general practice, you tip the group leader to be dispersed in the team. He/She is accountable to divide it equally among the team members. The head guide should receive a relatively big amount than porters and others lower in rank.

Comparatively, the Everest Base Camp trekking trail is more expensive than other trekking destinations. The meals and services are a bit costly on the trial. Especially, as you climb high the menu price goes up. The supporting staff has to spend a larger chip of their salary on lodging and flooding. So, the general rule for tipping your guide and porter in the Everest region is a bit different. Either you tip a cost of one day for a week spent on the trek or 15 percent of the total cost.

Tipping Guide in Nepal – Things to avoid

  • Avoid showing off your generosity, put your gift into an envelope
  • Do not Tip in front of other people, do it quickly so that others don’t notice it
  • Don’t give old and used items at tipping, because some guides may take it as an offense
  • Don’t offer a small amount like NRS5 to NRS20,
  • No need to wait for a favorable timing, tip whenever you are around the guide at the final hour of the trip

Show your gratitude on the last evening of your trip to tip the guide and porters. Otherwise, you may miss it the next morning. It is because sometimes the staff completes their service by the end of the trek. Since tipping is neither compulsory nor fixed, it depends not on the travelers’ choice. Many of the trekkers add some gifts on top of the monetary tips. The gifts include gear, sleeping bags, etc., if you are impressed with the service of the guide, you can add some gifts with monetary tips.

If you get an opportunity to dine with a local family, you should bring a small token of a present. Choose the gift thoughtfully. Ask Nepali people for a gift idea because something you carry might be considered unlucky.

The Gift of Gears

Most of the trekkers visit Nepal for an adventure trek. They purchase trekking gear, and clothing in the local market to limit their luggage weight. After completing the trip, they might think to contribute it to their guides and porters. Ask your guide if she/he finds somebody to make use of the gears instead of directly offering her/him. If he/she accepts take no time to hand over the items. This will save you from causing anyone embarrassment over accepting the used items.

Final Thought

Tipping is often expected especially in the tourism service in Nepal. The restaurants and hotels add up a 10% service charge on top of the final bill which is a form of tipping. Whereas the field staff and trekking workers do not get any share of the service charge for their job. Tipping your trekking and supporting staff is a kind of motivation. It is also a form of appraisal that supports them in their living. Being a seasonal workforce, the high-altitude porters and guides do not have a job around the year. They can save a portion of the tips for no work time.

Best Season

7 Days Langtang Valley trek guide helps you to choose the right season for the trek. The trek can be possible around the year. However, the monsoon rain sometimes interrupts the lower section of the Langtang Valley’s trip to landslides. Besides, the distressing leech catches the trekkers, and very few travelers hike during the monsoon. Otherwise, the main season of Spring (March to May) and Autumn season (September to November) are the best time to trek the region.

Moderate temperature, clear skies, and enough greeneries are the wonderful aspects of the Autumn hike. Since both Autumn and Spring are the peak trekking seasons in Nepal, you may encounter relatively high traffic on the trail.

The spring days are relatively warmer but the lower part might be hazy. But the high altitude has clear skies. The blooming Rhododendron forest, wildflowers, and colorful pastures beautify the entire surrounding during the day of April and May.

Instead, the winter brings cold and harsh weather at higher elevations. The piled-up snow disrupts the hiking trail. You might have to check the weather forecast and pack extra to ensure personal safety during the winter trek.

Best Season to Trek Langtang

Trekking in Langtang valley is possible throughout the year. However, autumn and spring are the best seasons for the Langtang region trek. Because during that time, it offers clear views of the mountains and lush forests.

Autumn: The autumn skies are crystal clear, and the rain stops by the beginning of September. It is greener and the temperature is perfect for hiking during autumn.

Spring: The temperature is warmer but the sky may look foggy in the lower part. However, the mountain view in the upper valley is awesome.

Winter: The temperature may fall less than zero. The weather is even hard if there is snowfall in higher altitudes. The thick snow covering the trails can make it difficult to walk.

Summer:  Summer is relatively hot that begins in Nepal in mid-June. The frequent rain during the monsoon highly affects the trek in the hilly part of Nepal. Fooding and landslides disrupt the highway and even the trail section. So, very few people choose to go for the monsoon trek in the Langtang region.
